Mike Cassels
Mike Cassels, 47, sits in his living room in Athens, Ohio while watching NASCAR April 2008. Because of psoriasis, a chronic skin disease, and back problems, Cassels has not worked since 1999. “I can’t bend over for five minutes without my back hurting” said Cassels. Athens, Ohio had an unemployment rate of 5.6 percent in April 2008.

Houston and his brother grew up in separate foster families but lived within minutes of each other. “It just seemed like there was different stages of my life where I was just getting comfortable with the people I lived with and then ‘Wake up Don, you got to go somewhere again,” Donald said.

Hammers
Isaiah Gomes (center) is a part of a youth organization in Massachusetts called Crossroads for Kids that facilitates a youth leadership development program called C5 New England. The five-year program seeks out youth who demonstrate leadership potential and who are growing up in risk-filled environments. As a third year teen in C5, Gomes and other C5 teens went on a two week trip to Wyoming where they participated in activities like tours of Yellowstone National Park, white water rafting, rock climbing, and a weeklong backpacking trip through the back country. “This is like a once and a life time thing” said Gomes as he drifted down a river in Yellow Stone National Park.
